Fifteen - Little Wonders and BIG ?

 Hello,

I am currently sitting on a computer that isn't my own writing this blog without any of my notes or my beautiful mind map that perfectly explains my little and big wonders. why? the day after our lecture last week i went on holiday, i only got back last night and am at my grandparents now having my first moment of downtime. I was at Disneyland AKA my favourite place in the entire world - one of the only places i feel pure happiness and i decided i wasn't going to taint any of that with taking my work along... i work very hard the majority of the time so i allowed myself this!

Now im not giving you my life story for no reason; im telling you this because being back at disney for the first time since drama school gave me a new respect for the level of performance that goes on there. everyone is so talented! To make even grumpy adults excited and happy through dressing up as mickey mouse and dancing on a parade float reminds me of why i do what i do - i want to be a part of making people feel that same unfiltered happiness that i felt this week! (and yes Disneyland pls give me a job if you read this ahah)

I am also choosing to write this blog without my notes because i want to see what questions have suck in my head since i wrote them all down last week. i wrote A LOT of questions so i thought i would find out what i must think about most often by seeing what i remember after a week  away (method to my madness or just madness?)

little wonders:

- what makes a person so dedicated to the arts when its so hard?

- how do people become interested in MT when they live in places it may not be as accessible?

- What influences in music and performing have i had from traveling?

- Why are the Uk and USA the leading markets of both film/tv, MT and music / does growing up in one of these counties give me advantage or disadvantage?

BIG QUESTIONS:

- Do cutltural stereotypes and cultural upbringings affect the way people perceive the arts?

- Are specific music genres looked down upon because of their geographical origin?

- how is social media effecting the size and growth of MT and music markets worldwide?

-How does Broadway training set you up as a performer vs west end training, is one more effective?

honestly i could have written many many more but i will leave it at that for now... also are my little wonders more like big questions too? idk - my brain seems to forget the definition of 'little' a lot - go big or go home!

see you soon,

 T,D

  1. I hope you had a great time in Disneyland :) I totally agree living in the US and the UK allows so much more access to the arts and opportunity but within that, it then made me think of the disparities between regions that don't have the same opportunity and access; economically, distance wise etc. For example I'm in South Wales, where there isn't as much as in London/ South East but there is still so much more than many countries. And in America I'm sure its much more polarised between regions. It would be interesting if there was a study to show the differences in access to performing arts between countries and regions too. Look forward to hearing any findings you make :)

  2. The question you have about Broadway training vs west end training is very interesting, especially since at college we had the opportunity to experience a glimpse of what training on Broadway was like - was this something that inspired such a question?

  3. So glad you went to Disney and got to enjoy your time away from work and have fun! You deserved it! I love your questions and they lead to an interesting topic discussion of geographic and cultural influence on accessibility to larger-grade productions and opportunities in the industry.

  4. you have to give yourself breaks from time to time !! Disney is amazing im very jealous... your question - what makes a person so dedicated to the arts when its so hard - is such a good point !!! there are so many of us that struggle through income and pain and rejection and you think why, why are we doing this but when you get up on that stage all those feeling quickly fade away and everything feels calm.

Fourteen - module two let’s go

Hi,  So we finished module one and got our grades. As I am a total perfectionist I’m not as happy as I wanted to be with my grade but I was informed that I did very well and I’m too hard on myself so I’m trying out into perspective my view of myself and not hold myself at an unattainable standard.  So now onto module two. The reading of the module handbook is well underway but I can’t say it’s making me feel any more in the know yet; to put it simply I feel confused and overwhelmed with what I have to achieve in the next month or so… but we just have to take it one day at a time I guess.  To prevent myself from getting too worried I decided to focus on what i can do right now - I made a huge mind map of ideas for topics to develop further and how they connect with each other. I tried to differentiate between ‘bigger picture’ topics and the more individual ones. I like the ideas I’m forming but nervous that when it comes to fitting them in with what’s needed to pass ...

Thirteen; artefact diary 4

Hello,  it’s only been a minute but I’m here to upload the next stage of my guitar! I’m so so close to finishing it and it’s beginning to (in my humble opinion) look pretty good. The part I’m talking about in this blog is the sides and the neck. I’ve already spoken about this partly but the sides are a collage that represent my most influential moments in my creative life. It includes shows that have deep meaning to me, sheet music of songs that I have sung for big life changing events as well as photos of moments I consider influential to me. The neck consists of a collage of said sheet music as well as some quotes that inspire me to be my best and to never stop creating. I have handwritten the quotes before placing them on my guitar as it feels much more personal. The last piece I’ve added at this stage is a handwritten note from my nana about my passion in performing. My relationship I have with her is close to my heart as well as a huge influence for me as a performer so ...

Two; a trail of thoughts

So time for entry number 2! If I’m honest I planned to do this post a few days ago and to be posting another today but my life seems to only keep getting busier and time has gotten away from me, but here I am now! As I’d planned for more than one blog so far I think I’m going to take the opportunity I have now while I’m writing this blog to collate my thoughts and write one longer post.  So where to start. I’d like to round of my thoughts by talking about the module handbook. I definitely need to have another read (and probably never stop reading it) to keep my ideas coming and fully understand what it is I am doing or heading to do; that being said I have quite a lot of annotations so far and although the lenses of thought are tricky at times they’re already opening my mind to new ways of thinking about my practice that I may not have yet.  An example of this would be the theories of different types of learning. While I am aware of the ways in which we learn I had never consi...
