Seventeen - final ideas

 Hello,

It’s been a while! I promised myself I’d update my blog after my tutor meeting however two meetings later and I’m finally able to update; I have my final idea! (Kinda?)

I think finals a strong word and one that I probably shouldn’t be using yet as my topic/question is bound to grow and develop BUT my 4 questions from before are now just 1 question, which is good enough for me at the moment.

“To what extent does going to an international drama school effect one’s outlook on the musical theatre industry” -  The wording is very much yet to be determined but you get the idea.

From the very start I’ve wanted to look at experiences from people around the world including my own experiences of travelling against the musical theatre industry in the uk, and I feel that going to an international drama school was a huge factor in this. I also have so many questions around why the country I’ve grown up in seems to be a hub for musical theatre in a massively different way to other places (“seems” being the key word - will I be able to disprove myself). Anyway I’m straying but I think I’ll be able to involve all of these sub topics into my main project.

Again as I suggested in my previous blog, I think my research is going to come a lot from questionnaires and interviews rather than books and secondary sources however I’ve compiled a list of potentially good academic sources and I’m sitting through them at the moment.

I’m terms of questionnaire and interviews I’ve decided I have three main groups of people I want to talk to:

1) international students / graduates of MT

2) uk born and raised students / graduates of MT

3) teachers and mentors in the musical theatre industry

I aim to discuss their opinions about the uk industry, international industries and exposure to them as well as if their outlook on the industry changed due to travelling / mixing cultures through their training. I have other areas I’d like to discuss too but for now that’s where I’m heading.

Ok this ended up being quite a long blog so I’ll leave it here. Interested to see what people think.

Until next time,

T,D

  1. This sounds like a very interesting idea! Where did you train? I'm not so sure about MT and Drama because I'm a dancer, but American and Australian trained dancers always seem to be in a whole other league, but that could just be my limited experience, so I would be interested to see what your findings are about MT :)

    1. ahh thats so interesting, as a mt student we obviously hear a lot about USA because of Broadway but not so much Australia! I went to the International college of musical theatre. im excited to see what i find out too ahah

  2. I agree with what Carys said above, in the dance world it seems to be the Americans to watch out for! However, I have noticed a difference in the standard of dancers in the UK since shows like Dance Moms came out. I think it opened our eyes over here to the talent of such young dancers and seeing them pushed at such a young age explaining the talent of professionals! Perhaps its the same with MT? Could it be that the UK offers more opportunities for children to study MT compared to other countries?

    1. i agree completely about the whole dance moms thing! and yes this is what im interested in, it seems that the uk and usa have a lot of leverage on training as well as training for children but i wonder if this is all advertisement and perception due to media influences?

  3. hey, I think this is such an interesting topic to talk about. I come from an mt background training in the uk and recently im trying to perform anywhere other than the uk ahah. when it comes to MT it is interesting because a lot of my friends who come from her countries want to be in London as they say its better for musical theatre opportunities. I have travelled to different countries to perform MT however this has been with English companies. obviously America has an amazing MT seen but not just in New York! look at other cities such as San Fran etc

Fourteen - module two let’s go

Hi,  So we finished module one and got our grades. As I am a total perfectionist I’m not as happy as I wanted to be with my grade but I was informed that I did very well and I’m too hard on myself so I’m trying out into perspective my view of myself and not hold myself at an unattainable standard.  So now onto module two. The reading of the module handbook is well underway but I can’t say it’s making me feel any more in the know yet; to put it simply I feel confused and overwhelmed with what I have to achieve in the next month or so… but we just have to take it one day at a time I guess.  To prevent myself from getting too worried I decided to focus on what i can do right now - I made a huge mind map of ideas for topics to develop further and how they connect with each other. I tried to differentiate between ‘bigger picture’ topics and the more individual ones. I like the ideas I’m forming but nervous that when it comes to fitting them in with what’s needed to pass ...

Thirteen; artefact diary 4

Hello,  it’s only been a minute but I’m here to upload the next stage of my guitar! I’m so so close to finishing it and it’s beginning to (in my humble opinion) look pretty good. The part I’m talking about in this blog is the sides and the neck. I’ve already spoken about this partly but the sides are a collage that represent my most influential moments in my creative life. It includes shows that have deep meaning to me, sheet music of songs that I have sung for big life changing events as well as photos of moments I consider influential to me. The neck consists of a collage of said sheet music as well as some quotes that inspire me to be my best and to never stop creating. I have handwritten the quotes before placing them on my guitar as it feels much more personal. The last piece I’ve added at this stage is a handwritten note from my nana about my passion in performing. My relationship I have with her is close to my heart as well as a huge influence for me as a performer so ...

Two; a trail of thoughts

So time for entry number 2! If I’m honest I planned to do this post a few days ago and to be posting another today but my life seems to only keep getting busier and time has gotten away from me, but here I am now! As I’d planned for more than one blog so far I think I’m going to take the opportunity I have now while I’m writing this blog to collate my thoughts and write one longer post.  So where to start. I’d like to round of my thoughts by talking about the module handbook. I definitely need to have another read (and probably never stop reading it) to keep my ideas coming and fully understand what it is I am doing or heading to do; that being said I have quite a lot of annotations so far and although the lenses of thought are tricky at times they’re already opening my mind to new ways of thinking about my practice that I may not have yet.  An example of this would be the theories of different types of learning. While I am aware of the ways in which we learn I had never consi...
