Five; Just a stack of waffles

Hello, as promised I am back to do a proper blog this time (yes I am a day later than I said I would but who's counting)

The title of this blog is what it is because its come to that time when I'm seriously thinking about the essay, I have written my plan in a bullet proof format and my next stage will be writing it into an academic essay. However I have been told many times in the past that I tend to waffle, and while I prefer to see it less as waffle and more as a beautifully descriptive exploration, I understand that our 2500 word essay brief will not. this leads me into my next point of HOW WILL I FIT IN EVERYTHING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT ?? but then in my tutoring session this morning Pedro kindly reminded me that there is no word limit for our blogs, therefore my conclusion is that as I start my essay writing and editing process I will come to the blogs to write about all the other things I know I may not be able to include in the final essay.

Today my plan for this blog is to write down a few quotes that stuck with me from one of the books I've been reading, and why they feel useful for my practice. I will also summarise some of what happened in my most recent one to one as well as group class, I understand that anyone who is reading this who is not me may find that part of my blog very uninteresting as it is personal to my own project but first and foremost this blog is for me so that's what I'm going to be doing.

first the quotes as that's probably more interesting to anyone reading this:

"Even if we look like functioning artists to the world, we feel we never do enough and what we do isn't right. we are victims of our own internalised perfectionist" - The Artists Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, by Julia Cameron

This quote felt very truthful to me. the whole section of this book leans towards this idea, and how our own mind gets in the way of creativity so much because of our 'inner critic', we will never think we are good enough. this quote, while speaking to me personally, is relevant for one of my areas of learning. I will be using this book a lot when it comes to talking about pressure and confidence in the audition room and as a performer. this also leans nicely into the idea of writers block as a lyricist, which is a another topic close to me.

"the events in our live happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves, they find their own order...the continuous thread of revelation" - Eudora Welty (referenced in The Artists Way)

This quote is a little more vague to me but I can still very much find the truth in it. I know that each event I have experienced has caused me to feel a particular way, thus leading me to take certain actions that have changed my path. I may not know it at the time or may fully understand the relevance of it but either way it is all part of my journey and will be part of my reflection when the time comes. the relevance to this in my essay? I have realised, when trying to connect my topics, that each 'thing I have learned' in my essay has only happened because of another 'thing I have learned'. for example if I had not overcome confidence and pressure at drama school I wouldn't have volunteered to write a musical, therefore wouldn't have learned how much I love to write music. likewise I wouldn't have been inspired to write so many songs in New York if I hadn't unlocked my songwriting journey. it all feeds into each other and I feel this quote encapsulated that.

"at the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities" - Jean Houston (referenced in The Artists Way)

I LOVE this quote for many reasons. I believe that all great creativity comes from either immense joy or immense pain (or any emotion that is string enough to be honest). I am also a firm believer that everything is better when you can find the laughter in it, where would humanity be if we couldn't find joy and laughter. but I also think that the reference of the kaleidoscope of possibilities is beautiful as that's exactly how I see the world when I feel inspired. now ignoring my own personal bias to this quote it has relevance in my essay as this is the exact feeling I I had when I was in New York, the whole experience felt like a never ending opportunity filled with learning and laughter and friendship.

I am now realising that this title really does rain true and I will have to finish this blog on another page... for now that's my quotes see you tomorrow for part two of what I planned to talk about,

  1. That’s a great idea about putting all the stuff we can’t fit into the blogs. I would say I’m probably quite the opposite of a waffler, but I was shocked how much I had to edit my draft down. So I will put the bits I couldn’t fit on to my blog! Look forward to reading part 2

Fourteen - module two let’s go

Hi,  So we finished module one and got our grades. As I am a total perfectionist I’m not as happy as I wanted to be with my grade but I was informed that I did very well and I’m too hard on myself so I’m trying out into perspective my view of myself and not hold myself at an unattainable standard.  So now onto module two. The reading of the module handbook is well underway but I can’t say it’s making me feel any more in the know yet; to put it simply I feel confused and overwhelmed with what I have to achieve in the next month or so… but we just have to take it one day at a time I guess.  To prevent myself from getting too worried I decided to focus on what i can do right now - I made a huge mind map of ideas for topics to develop further and how they connect with each other. I tried to differentiate between ‘bigger picture’ topics and the more individual ones. I like the ideas I’m forming but nervous that when it comes to fitting them in with what’s needed to pass ...

Thirteen; artefact diary 4

Hello,  it’s only been a minute but I’m here to upload the next stage of my guitar! I’m so so close to finishing it and it’s beginning to (in my humble opinion) look pretty good. The part I’m talking about in this blog is the sides and the neck. I’ve already spoken about this partly but the sides are a collage that represent my most influential moments in my creative life. It includes shows that have deep meaning to me, sheet music of songs that I have sung for big life changing events as well as photos of moments I consider influential to me. The neck consists of a collage of said sheet music as well as some quotes that inspire me to be my best and to never stop creating. I have handwritten the quotes before placing them on my guitar as it feels much more personal. The last piece I’ve added at this stage is a handwritten note from my nana about my passion in performing. My relationship I have with her is close to my heart as well as a huge influence for me as a performer so ...

Two; a trail of thoughts

So time for entry number 2! If I’m honest I planned to do this post a few days ago and to be posting another today but my life seems to only keep getting busier and time has gotten away from me, but here I am now! As I’d planned for more than one blog so far I think I’m going to take the opportunity I have now while I’m writing this blog to collate my thoughts and write one longer post.  So where to start. I’d like to round of my thoughts by talking about the module handbook. I definitely need to have another read (and probably never stop reading it) to keep my ideas coming and fully understand what it is I am doing or heading to do; that being said I have quite a lot of annotations so far and although the lenses of thought are tricky at times they’re already opening my mind to new ways of thinking about my practice that I may not have yet.  An example of this would be the theories of different types of learning. While I am aware of the ways in which we learn I had never consi...
